We are currently looking for donations and volunteers with GREEN thumbs to help us remove the current thorny plants in the garden. Please contact us if you would like to participate or make a donation.

 

 
Howard Drive Elementary is participating in the 2009/2010 Green School Challenge.  The challenge is to reduce energy consumption throughout the school year by recycling, reusing and correcting energy inefficiencies.

Howard Drive needs residential involvement in reaching their goal in the Green School Challenge. We ask that each of you please fill out an online FPL Home Energy Survey and provide your results to your student’s teacher. www.fpl.com

GREEN PATROLS

BY-LAWS

ARTICLE I – NAME

The name of this association shall be the Howard Drive Elementary Green Patrols, hereinafter referred to as the Green Patrols.
ARTICLE II – PURPOSE

The Howard Drive Elementary Green Patrols is an environmental student organization that will provide students with opportunities that support an environmentally conscious school community. The patrol will connect with the school, and neighborhood communities through “hands-on” learning experiences. The organization will teach students about local and global energy resources and environmental issues.  It will monitor the school’s energy consumption and use of renewable and nonrenewable resources.  Members of the Green Patrol will initiate, monitor and carry out recycling programs at the school. They will also participate in local and or global energy saving program i.e. The Dream In Green Challenge.

ARTICLE III – MEMBERSHIP

Section 1. Selection of Green Patrol – A patrol member may be a  third , fourth or fifth grade student.  The patrol members will be selected after completing an application form to the classroom teacher.  Two members from each class will be selected by the homeroom teacher. Based on the student’s interest and response on the application form a student may be selected to join the Green Patrol.   Selection of the Green Patrol will be based on their 1) leadership ability, 2) citizenship and conduct 4) judgment ability,  5) attendance 6) willingness to work 7) dedication to saving the environment and commitment to the patrols mission.  It is recommended that students on the Green Patrol not be involved in other school groups or clubs that involve daily morning assignments or jobs i.e. safety patrol, morning announcements.

Section 2. Membership Requirements - The following requirements must be met to participate as a Green Patrol.  Students must  1) each member and their parent or guardian must take the  Howard Drive Elementary Green Patrol Pledge and  2) maintain a letter grade  of  “C” or better in conduct throughout school year.

Section 3. Term of Membership -The regular term of membership on the Green Patrol shall be one school year.

                                                ARTICLE IV -RESPONSIBILITIES

The Green Patrol members will be responsible to help with school-wide recycling of paper, plastics and cans. Monitoring energy consumption in the school building i.e. check for lights out in classroom, computer monitors off in classrooms. Participate in school-wide recycling drives for uniforms, old sneakers, printer ink cartridges and other nonrenewable items.

 

 

HOWARD DRIVE ELEMENTARY GREEN PATROL MISSION STATEMENT: Our mission is to support a Green Concept School at Howard Drive Elementary School. Student members and the school community will learn to be  responsible for maintaining a healthy Earth through environmental education. The Green Patrol will help build knowledge and awareness of environmental issues and consciousness to the school community. The patrol’s mission is to build a “green” school community committed to proactive participation in reducing, reusing and recycling energy and nonrenewable resources.

I will encourage my family and friends to follow the 3 R’s - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle; walk, bike, carpool or take public transportation; and conserve energy and water to help protect the environment for a better planet earth!
